The village started as a mining camp and was donated to the Lutheran Church to be used as a retreat/camp setting. The buildings are older log structures and the staff keeps them clean and comfortable. We stayed in a dorm style facility that was very comfortable. The place depends heavliy on volunteers who stay at the village in return for room and board. They do a great job.
Part of the deal for our "Let Justice Roll" program was that we had to do a service project for the village. We had a great time stacking fire wood to help get ready for a snowy winter. This is a picture of my work team.
We were able to sneak away during some free time to enjoy the mountains around Holden. We hiked up to Holden lake which was five miles, 10 round trip, we really had to move to make it back to the village before evening vespers! It was rainy and cold, even some snow, and we had a great time!
It really is an incredible place. Hopefully I'll be able to make it back up there soon.
