On Sunday evening Heather and I attended a joint worship service between the United Methodist Church and The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It was a beautiful service and a deeply moving experience. Bishops from each denomination began the service by pouring water together into a large font; marking the beginning of our journey together in the confluence of the waters.
The service began at a Woodland Park United Methodist Church and we processed together to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church--both in downtown Seattle.
The service was thoughtfully crafted taking advantage of some of the best musical offerings from each tradition. The choirs that sang added lively and wonderful voices to our assembly.
Not only was it a beautiful worship service, marking the beginning of a powerful relationship between two denominations, it was great for me to be able to simply attend a service. So often I am leading the services it is a nice change to be able to sit in the pew and simply be there.
As we gathered together in the waning sunlight it felt like a thin place, where the distance between us and God was not so great. Like those mountain tops we treasure, seeking the places where God can be found.
