Let Justice Roll

Every year there is a program for high school youth in the pacific northwest called "Let Justice Roll". It is hosted at Holden Village on the northern end of Lake Chelan. It's not especially easy to get to, but it's worth it.
The "Let Justice Roll" weekend if for high school youth that are emerging leaders in their congregations and who are interested in issues of peace, justice, environmental stewardship, and advocacy. Each year there is a different theme, and this year we were grateful to have the Rev. Dr. George Johnson with us to talk about the communities we serve in a biblical context.
At the "Let Justice Roll" weekends we deal with serious issues and topics and strive to empower our young people to be involved and be agents of change. We tackle serious stuff, but we have a lot of fun too!
One of the activities we did this year was egg decorating. That's right, it's not even close to Easter, and here we are decorating eggs. This isn't your average Easter egg food color dip though. One of the members of the planning team is an internationally recognized egg art expert. Her field of mastery is, "Pysanky". Here is a picture of the pysanky studio we set up.

As you can see it involves flame and wax and a special tool to draw a design on the egg. You have to keep the kistka (the wax stylus) hot and full of bees wax--which is no easy task and in our case ended in general hilarity. Our leader guided us through the process of Pysanky egg decorating with great care and we all ended up with a fairly decent finished product. There is more to the art form than simply laying wax on an egg (although we would be remiss to call that simple) it has a whole host of meaning and symbolism behind every action and shape. It is a prayerful and meditative art that calls us to consider our faith, our actions, and our work in the world.

As our weekend unfolded we talked about the hurts in the world and how we might bring light to those places.

We had a full moon in the village, here is a picture of the moon setting in the morning.

Our group this year!
